Hi Walt, and welcome to the forum!
I don't know all that much about Sands, but the aviation magazines reported that the "New York sportsman" was the first person that ordered a Blériot XI after the Channel fllight. This obviously never came through and he bought an Antoinette instead. He apparently quit flying soon after the Cannes meeting and sold the Antoinette to Germany, probably to E.E.C. Mathis in Strasbourg. The machine was flown by Eugen Wiencziers, still carrying the Cannes race number 15.
I stumbled over a notice in the New York Times that reported about his suicide in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1936. He had apparently lost money in the property business. I can send you the article if you want.
Cheers,
Anders
