The true identity of "Edmond"

Postby Anders » Wed Mar 04, 2015 7:09 pm

I have modified the Cannes pages by adding the name Edmond Morelle, the true name of the pilot "Edmond". He raced both cars and airplanes under pseudonym, as was allowed by both federations, and his real name has only been found out recently through a cooperation of automobile and aviation enthusiasts. You can find out more through this thread on the "Aerodrome" Forum!

In E.J. Lassalle's book "Les 100 premiers aviateurs brevetés du monde et la naissance de l'aviation", which is the most well-known summary of the early French flyers, it was stated that Morelle lost all contact with the aviation world after qualifying for "Brevet" No. 35 on 8 March 1910...

And I have another similar identification to announce soon...

And here's the proof:

See this page of the Orléans newspaper "Journal du Loiret", 17-18 January 1910:

Aéro-Club du Centre
L'aviateur Edmond Morelle

or, with some help of automatic translation:
Aéro-Club du Centre
The Aviator Edmond Morelle
A member of the Aéro-Club du Centre, Mr. Edmond Morelle, has just taken delivery at the factories of Chalons, of a Farman airplane.
We know that Mr. Morelle, who since nearly two years lives in our town, had a brilliant part, glorious even, in the sport of the automobile races. Darracq's champion in Paris-Berlin, Paris-Vienna, where he placed second, and in the tragic Paris-Madrid, he then competed in the circuits of Auvergne and Sarthe, like Henri Farman in the team Renault Frères.
Also, it is driving an Henri Farman biplane, with Renault engine, that the new Aviator made his excellent debut. For his third flight, the skilled pilot realized a flight of twenty minutes, during which he however touched the ground; the next day he managed another beautiful flight of ten consecutive minutes! So it's almost certainly Mr. Edmond Morelle may, as he desires, perform sensational and successful flights abroad. We wish him with all our heart, that he can take a place, like his teammate of old Henri Farman, among the "Kings of the Air".

Cheers,
Anders
